Upon Steff's recommendation, I Photoshopped Armand's picture to Black and White, and then futzed with the brightness and contrast until I arrived at a very pleasing balance.

Oh, and I told the lady at Kroger's lab about the photo cd, and she told me to bring the photos back so they can fix the problem. Should have them back by monday with a shiny happy new photo cd.
I rewound the roll of Agfa film I had in my camera (only took one picture on it) and pitched the damn thing, as well as the unused roll still in my camera bag. Bought some Kodak T-Max 100 film. Gonna have some fun with that.
sounds cool. tmax is good film.
with 100, just wait for a sunny day, but a cloudy day with a tripod could get some really nice even tones.
i find sunshine with b&w is never that satisfying, for two reasons:
1) tones get too extreme and too contrasty and shadows really overtake the shot, which doesn't affect colour as much, but dominates b&w.
2) when you have shots that feature a horizon, it gets fucking boring with a blue sky since it just comes out bland and grey.
colour looks limp with cloud, but b&w with cloud becomes moody and impressive, like that rocks & the city one i sent you.
it was clouds that turned me back onto b&w. :)
his eyes look awesome here, btw, with the b&w, i think. very dramatic now.
by the way, i don't know if you've ever played with "curves" under "adjustments," but you can plot points on that grid and pull the gridline in lighter/darker directions to affect the different tonal values, which can sometimes help even out the shadow/light balance when contrast isn't helping you achieve a better balance.
i had a hard time with the rocks / city shot 'cos of the dark rocks in the foreground and the washed out city in the back, and that takes some finagling to get just right.
NOW... after all that? a nap. :) glad you're having fun with photoshop.
you know your lollipops and shit from your last batch? have you photoshopped them and cranked up the saturation on them? i bet it'd help them really pop, too. i liked those shots but it seems to me now that they were a bit faded (to be expected from bright colours coming from the lab, actually), and i'd be curious to see what they amount to with some of that.
let me know if you try it out. :)
Armand is beautiful! Give him a big hug for me. He looks like a big teddy bear.
Looks great but try leaving him black and white and painting his eyes his natural blue/green color. Could look pretty cool.
Steff - Thanks as always for the pointers. God knows I need them!
Nanabear - He is a big teddy bear. I'll pass along the compliment, I'm sure he'll appreciate it! :-)
Texas - You're not the first person to say that about b&w pictures of Armand. Jeff, a guy at work, is a studio photographer on the side, and he suggested the same thing a while ago about a picture of Armand looking out the living room blinds.
Leaving his eyes colored vs. b&w, I think, is the line between graphic and fine art. I'm sticking more to the fine side right now, but if anybody could tell me how to color them in, I'd love to learn and I'll post the result.
