Last night I was in the photography section flipping through a book of celebrity portraits when I made a realization. I want somebody to want to take my picture, in more than just a passing snapshot, without them knowing that's what I want.

Pathetic, isn't it, ths craving validation from others?

Especially after developing that last roll of film, somebody mentioned that I take a lot of pictures of myself. I jokingly told them it's because I'm the only model that'll sit still for me, but really I wanted to say "If I don't, who will?"

Hmm, can't decide whether we have here a case of vanity, or lack of it...

Plenty of people will take pictures of you over the years, don't panic, you look fine.

Taking lots of pictures of yourself and scrutinising them is a good way to make yourself paranoid about appearence - or have a house plastered in your likeness...

I think it's more philosophical, like Robin Williams' monologue in "One Hour Photo". My own little stand against the passage of time.

Now, the bit about wanting my picture taken like the celebrities, that's purely shallow and superficial. I admit that, and with a certain amount of shame.

Well I love the stand against time. As that is the great enemy. Part of the reason I love photos so much, the great pause buttons...

The important thing is that you're honest with yourself, and know your desires. Shallow or not. ;)

The best picture you can take, is the one that no one knows you're taking. At least that is how I always find my best subjects ... Though my daughter gets somewhat nutty whenever my camera comes out of its bag ...

Still there's something about knowing when someone is taking a picture of you that takes all the spontaneity and realness right out of it. Too much posing I think.

Don't be so concerned with the pictures that are developed after the fact, but with the pictures you leave in the minds of others. That's what truly counts.
