Really how this came about was Tuesday, at work, I was assembling a Troy-Bilt log splitter. The hydraulic hose specifically goes above the hitch tube when you attach it, and I can never remember that. So I looked at my notebook wrote "ABOVE" on my hand. Afterward, I'm listening to a song called "Rise Above It" by the Afro Celts, and a neat little photographic project pops in my mind.
Most people (at least the ones who make a regular habit of writing on their hand) usually jot down quick "to do" things, peoples' phone numbers, etc, basically using it as an extension of their short term memory. I thought it'd be interesting to twist that context and write something long term and almost spiritual. Yesterday I took a picture of it with my camera, and this marks the first time I've ever purposely created something to photograph it. Usually I photograph whatever I stumble upon. This gives me an idea for a series of photos...
Oh, and "memo to myself" is also a borrowed song lyric from They Might Be Giants:
"Memo to myself: Do the dumb things I gotta do. Touch the puppet head."
(don't worry, I've been listening to that song since I was in fifth grade and I still have no idea what that line means, if it has any meaning at all)
That's beautiful! And brilliant! I wish I were a talented photographer like you are (or even a decent one) because I've been wanting to do a photo essay on arms for a while. I think the human arm is magnificent and I envision a series of photos of disembodied arms, with and without tattoos, jewelry, notes to self, etc.
Well, it sounds like you have a wonderful vision! I most certainly don't think of myself as anything beyond an advanced amateur. Just grab a camera and make it happen! I'd love to see your efforts. :-)
Memo to Andy Pants: UPDATE!
Memo to Andy Pants' hand:
-Feel weird without a ring on? I know I was always searching for mine.
-Book plane to DFW.
